Inside a Professional Detail: What Happens to Your Car at Vapour Auto.
Most customers drop their car off at a detailer and pick it up a few hours later, no clearer on what actually happened. This is the honest walk-through: every step of a full detail at Vapour Auto, in the order it happens, and why each step matters.
Step 0: The Walk-Around
Before we touch the car, we walk it with you. We are looking for:
- Existing paint damage (scratches, swirl marks, oxidation, rock chips)
- Interior wear that will not come out (cracked leather, deep stains, burn marks)
- Trim damage or missing clips
- Anything you want us to be careful around (aftermarket parts, sentimental items, a child seat that needs reinstalling)
This is also the conversation where we tell you what is realistic. Steam cleaning will not fix a tear in your seat. Polishing will not save a clear coat that has already failed. Honest scope upfront beats disappointed handovers.
Step 1: Interior Strip-Down
The interior comes out first because everything we vacuum and steam-clean creates dust that we do not want landing on freshly cleaned paint. The crew removes floor mats, child seats, and anything loose. Everything is bagged and set aside.
A coarse vacuum pass picks up the obvious debris. Then a precision pass with detail tools gets the seams, under-seat tracks, and HVAC vents. Pet hair, broken cereal, parking-lot grit, and the year's worth of tiny things that fall between the seat and the centre console all come out at this stage.
Step 2: Steam-Based Interior Service
This is the core of what makes us different from a vacuum-and-wipe shop. Pressurized steam at about 250°F is run through every surface:
- Fabric and carpet to lift embedded soil and sanitize fibres
- Leather and vinyl at adjusted pressure to clean pores without drying out the material
- Plastic trim and dashboards to dissolve hand oils and dust film
- Headliner carefully, because headliners are glued and oversaturation pulls them loose
- Seat belts, which are usually the dirtiest thing in a car and rarely cleaned
- HVAC vents and door jambs, where most "old car smell" actually lives
Each surface is wiped with a clean microfibre as the steam pass is completed. Nothing sits wet. By the end, the cabin is dry to the touch and smells like the materials themselves, not like cleaner.
Step 3: Exterior Decontamination
Outside, we do not start with soap. We start by removing the things that bonded chemically to your paint, which soap will not touch:
- Iron particles (brake dust embedded in the clear coat) get dissolved with an iron remover that turns purple as it reacts
- Tar and sap are softened with a dedicated solvent and lifted off
- Tree pitch, road film, and bug residue get steam-treated and wiped
Only then does the actual wash happen, using a two-bucket method that prevents grit from being dragged back across the paint. Every panel is touched with a clean mitt and a clean rinse.
Step 4: Wheels, Tires, and Wheel Wells
Wheels get their own steam pass. Brake dust is acidic and bakes onto wheel faces over time. Steam at the right pressure lifts it without the harsh acid cleaners most shops default to (which damage clear-coated rims). Wheel wells are cleaned of road grime and salt. Tires are degreased and dressed with a non-greasy finish.
Step 5: Glass and Trim
Inside and outside glass is cleaned to a streak-free finish at every angle, including the inside of the windshield (the part most owners give up on). Trim, badges, and emblems are detailed individually with brushes designed for tight grooves.
Step 6: Protection Layer
The last stage is whatever protection the customer chose:
- A standard sealant or quick wax for a few months of protection
- A polymer sealant for six to twelve months
- A ceramic coating for multi-year protection (this is a separate, longer service)
- Tire dressing, plastic trim restorer, and a glass treatment as needed
Interior protection includes leather conditioner where appropriate and a fabric protector for cloth seats if requested.
Step 7: Walk-Through at Handover
We do not just hand the keys back. We walk the car with you, show you what changed, and explain how to keep it that way. If we found something during the work that was not visible at drop-off (a chip we noticed, a wear point developing), we mention it then.
The Tools Behind the Process
A few things we use that most shops do not:
- Commercial-grade steam machines with regulated pressure and temperature
- Pad-and-polisher kits for paint correction (not all-in-one wax machines)
- PH-neutral, low-VOC products rather than the strongest chemical that will get a result
- Edgeless microfibres, sorted by surface (one for glass, one for paint, one for interior) so contamination does not cross over
The tools matter because the difference between a good detail and a great one is mostly procedural: clean tool, clean direction, clean rinse, every time.
Why Process Discipline Matters in Ottawa
Ottawa weather is the reason process matters more here than in a milder climate. Salt sits in seams for six months a year. Sand from winter sidings ends up everywhere. UV is intense in summer because the air is clear. A car that gets sloppy detailing in Ottawa ages faster than one that gets sloppy detailing in Vancouver. We built our process around that.
Quick answers to common questions
A standard vapour detail is three to six hours. Paint correction adds half a day or more. Ceramic coating is typically a two-day service because the coating needs cure time.
Most customers drop off. The shop is not really set up for a comfortable wait, and rushing the process is not how we work.
Yes. Interior-only services are popular for new-to-you used cars or for owners who want their cabin sanitized between full details.
We take cars in most conditions. If a vehicle is unusually neglected (years of sitting outside, biological contamination, etc.) we may quote a recovery service separately because it takes considerably longer than a standard detail.
